JEWELRY NEWS - Albright's Pins Featured in Exhibition - Former Secretary of State used pins as a tool for diplomacy
The first major museum exhibition of jewelry from the personal
collection of Madeleine Albright is currently underway at the New York's Museum of Arts
and Design will continue through January 31,
2010.
In 1997, Albright was named the first female Secretary of State and
became, at that time, the highest ranking woman in the history of the
U.S. government. While serving under President Bill Clinton, first as
U.S ambassador to the United Nations, and then as Secretary of State,
Albright became known for wearing brooches that purposefully conveyed
her views about the situation at hand. "I found that jewelry had become
part of my personal diplomatic arsenal," Secretary Albright has said.
"While P resident George H.W. Bush had been known for saying 'Read my
lips,' I began urging colleagues and reporters to 'Read my pins.' The exhibit coincides with the release of Albright's new book, "Read
My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat's Jewel Box", which explores jewelry as a
diplomatic, political and social tool.
A highlight of the exhibition will be the brooch that began Secretary
Albright's unusual use of pins as a tool in her diplomatic arsenal.
After Saddam Hussein's press referred to her as a serpent, Secretary
Albright wore a golden snake brooch pinned to her suit for her next
meeting on Iraq.
The collection that Secretary Albright cultivated is distinctive and
democratic-sometimes demure and understated, sometimes outlandish and
outspoken-spanning more than a century of jewelry design and including
fascinating pieces from across the globe. For more information on this fascinating collection, visit the Museum of Arts and Design web site...

JEWELRY CARE TIP - Buy Quality Jewelry
One
of the best ways to be assured that the jewelry you buy will endure for a long time
is to buy well-made, high quality jewelry in the first place. You d on't have to "break the bank" to do it - high quality, high
fashion jewelry can certainly be affordable if you become knowledgeable about
what you buy. As Joe Brandt writes in his book "Protecting The Family Jewels", big discounts do not mean better
prices in the jewelry industry. Most times, big discounts just mean lesser
quality. Of course you should always look for the "best prices", but be sure to
compare quality and craftsmanship as well.
Remember that, with very few exceptions,
there are no manufacturer's "list" pr ices on jewelry, as there are on items
such as name brand wrist watches. Jewelry retail prices, on which the "big"
discounts are based, are actually made up by the store, or chain of stores,
selling it.
Quality for quality, any independent jewelry
store can compete with any "big" discounter. Dondero Diamonds, and most
established fine jewelry stores, do not however, choose to sell commercial
grade gems and pieces. We have to back the quality of what we sell with our
reputation - and the service that comes with that reputation. If you are
looking for a gift of jewelry that will last a lifetime, and want to receive
the best and most fair price for it, along with the service and guarantees to
back it up, come see us. We'll help you learn about what you're buying so you
can make the best decision about the jewelry investment you're making - no
matter where you make the purchase.
While you're shopping with us this Christmas
Season, ask us to check and professionally polish your jewelry so it looks its
best for the holidays. We do it as a courtesy every day we open our doors. Peace and Joy!!

FEATURED GEMSTONE - Tanzanite
Tanzanite is an exotic, vivid blue, kissed by purple hues. Legend has it
that tanzanite was first discovered when some brown gemstone crystals lying on
the dry earth were caught in a fire set by lightning that swept through the
grass-covered hills. The Masai herders driving cattle in the area noticed the
beautiful blue color and picked the crystals up, becoming the first tanzanite
collectors.
Tanzanite has the beauty, rarity and durability to rival any gemstone. It is
the ultimate prize of a gemstone safari. Tanzanite is mined only in Tanzania at
the feet of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro.
Virtuall y every tanzanite is heated to permanently change its color from
orange-brown to the spectacular violet-blue color for which this precious
gemstone variety is known.
Due to its minor hardness (6.5-7 on Mohs scale) tanzanite is not
very resistant. Therefore it should be worn with care, and should never be
cleaned by ultrasonic methods.
One of the most popular blue gemstones available today, tanzanite occurs in
a variety of shapes and sizes and also provides a striking assortment of tonal
qualities. Rarely pure blue, tanzanite almos t always display its signature
overtones of purple. In smaller sizes, tanzanite tends toward the lighter tones
and the lavender color is more common. While in larger sizes, tanzanite
typically displays deeper, richer color.
Tanzanite is so hot, it was the first gemstone added to the birthstone list
since 1912 by the American Gem Trade Association, when it was added as an
alternative December birthstone.
