JEWELRY NEWS - Olympic Jewelry: The True Cost Of A Gold
There's a group of people around the world that spend their lives training,
practicing for and dreaming of a big gold pendant. This gold accessory is
generally hung in a house - sometimes framed - and by any account, cannot be
considered the 'perfect' accessory for an everyday ensemble.

This pendant, also known as an Olympic Gold medal represents blood, sweat and
tears. The quest for which, as witnessed recently in Vancouver, can also be
lethal. One would think that such a jewel is invaluable. Well, in many respects
it is. You can only get it if you're the best in your field. Wearing it is a
cause of national pride and in all honesty - it's a jewel for the young. Once
you get to your 30s, the chances of hanging one around your neck decreases
immensely. So - invaluable? Sort of. Is it worth millions? In pride yes, in
dollars - more like $200.
The ultimate prize for the winter Olympians in Vancouver is a rather heavy
medal plated with 6 grams of gold. Weighing in at over a pound, these medals are
not for the slight of frame.
The performance of the medals has garnered mixed reviews (not from those that
actually win them though - without exception the athletes are elated to own
one). According to the medal's designers, Vancouver architect Omer Arbel and
artist Corrine Hunt, inspiration for the designs was drawn from ocean waves,
snowdrifts and mountain ranges. Critics note they seem more representative
though of potato chips and the melting clocks from Salvador Dali's painting "The
Persistence of Memory."
Our opinion - it's one wavy, snowy, mountainous, potato chip, melting clock
that's priceless, timeless and stunningly beautiful.

JEWELRY CARE TIP - This !#*!% Clasp!
Sometimes
it won't hook. Sometimes it won't open. It's so important to the security of
your fine jewelry....but it's so frustrating. What is it ? It's the clasp on your
bracelet or neck chain. When you put on
that diamond necklace, or gold and gemstone bracelet you should understand that
if your clasp is not in the best working order, or if is not hooked properly,
your jewelry is at risk.
We've discussed in the past the security risk of worn prongs and how to check them to protect your investment. Often the bigger risk is the condition of the clasp on your neck or wrist jewelry. Sometimes even the
most expensive clasps are too complicated to hook properly. And because they
are made from precious metals, they are subject to metal fatigue, and will wear out and become weak with age.
Like
most of our jewelry, we will just put necklaces and bracelets on and "go", and often leave the pieces on for long periods of time. It's important
that you have your clasps checked on a regular basis. If a clasp is not working,
that is immediately apparent to you. Why it's not working may need to be
determined by a jeweler.
At
Dondero's free clasp inspection is a part of our free cleaning service. A lot
of times if it's bent out of shape or misaligned, we'll fix it on the spot. If
it's showing wear or fatigue that puts your jewelry at risk, we'll bring that to your attention. We keep all the most popular clasps in inventory in our shop, and we'll
guide you if you need a replacement. If the clasp you have is difficult to hook, we can also show you very secure clasps that may function better for you.
As
with all of our tips, if you have questions please call or stop in. Since 1948
we've been here to serve all of your jewelry needs.

FEATURED GEMSTONE - Aquamarine
Aquamarine, the lovely blue-green member of the beryl family, has been
used in jewelry since the third century B.C. and is one of the most fashionable
gemstones today. For hundreds of years it was called "The Sailor's Stone," due
to its sea-like colors, ranging from a pale sky blue to a deep blue-green, and
was thought to protect sailors and people traveling over water.
The earliest aquamarine probably came from India, where it was highly
regarded by Hindu mystics as an aid to promoting mental clarity and to improving
one's public speaking. Even today, many people who believe in the spiritual properties of gemstones
wear aquamarine to give them religious and mental inspira tion, provide inner
calm and enhance both verbal and written communication. Aquamarine's popularity
helped make it a March birthstone earlier this century.
Queen Elizabeth II owns a matched set of aquamarine necklace, bracelet and
earrings given to her by the Brazilian people shortly after her coronation in
1953. The Queen has added a matching tiara and sometimes wears the entire
aquamarine ensemble for state occasions or diplomatic receptions.
Aquamarine has always been available in small sizes from one-half carat up to
10-carat stones. However, finds in Brazil and Africa have made aquamarine of
much larger sizes more accessible for use in jewelry. Recently designers have begun combining aquamarines with golden citrines,
emeralds or tsavorite garnets, sapphires and pink tourmalines to provide fresh
fashion color palettes.
You don't have to be a sailor or a March-born baby to enjoy the beauty and
sparkle of aquamarine. It's a year-round treasure of a gem.
